Say I have proved my case inasmuch as I consider that the first impression of W. S. Gilbert to be snatched from a biography is not that of a mere jester, the sentiment of the prologue has yet to be justified to this end I must try to bring you into touch with the personality of the man. Even if we hold that a man's work should be judged purely on its own merits there can be little doubt that the merely human qualities of either artist or craftsman are of considerable importance to those with whom his work brings him into contact.
