Earth is covered 70 percent by water. The total amount of water in the world is approximately 1.4 billion km , of which 97.5 percent is saltwater, occupying 1,351,000,000 km . Freshwater lakes and rivers, ice and snow, and underground aquifers hold 2.5 percent of this water: 35 million km of freshwater on earth. Nearly 70 percent, or 24.34 million km , of freshwater is in the form of glacial ice or snow. Groundwater and soil moisture account for 10.55 million km (30.1 percent). Only 0.3 percent is in freshwater lakes, rivers, and swamps. Of this surface freshwater, 87 percent is found in lakes. Freshwater lakes hold about 0.1 million km . Rivers, the most visible form of freshwater, account for 0.002 million km .
