If the Egyptian garrison of Damascus had not withstood him, the Tatar conqueror would have continued his advance and invaded the Sinai desert and attacked the Mamluks in their own backyard.King Al-Nasser Muhammad bin Qalawun, sitting on the throne of the Egyptian state, was simultaneously facing difficulties at home and wars abroad. But in that difficult circumstance, he forgot his grudges and rivalries, and called his friends and enemies alike, the leaders of the country, and explained the situation to them and said that Egypt was in danger that threatened its existence, and if the Tatars invaded it, all the Mamluks and the entire Egyptian people would become slave slaves to those cruel tyrants.
