Life of Ferdinand Magellan and the First Circumnavigation of the Globe

Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. IT is a curious circumstance that, while the world is year by year presented with biographies of persons who cannot lay claim to a tithe of the renown so justly accorded to Magellan, no life of the great circumnavi gator has yet been written in English, or indeed - if we make one exception - ih any other language. The exception is Snr. Diego de Barros Arana's Vida y Wages de Hernando do Magallanes, which in 1881 was translated into Portuguese by Snr. F. De Magalhaes villas-boas, with the addition of an original appendix. This work, although accurate, does not aim at detail, and Magellan's early life in India under Almeida and Albuquerque is dismissed in five pages. Students de sirons of a further knowledge are forced to gather it as best they can from the pages of N avarrete, or to tread the thorny paths of the old chronicles and the docu ments of the Torre do Tombo and Simancas.
