After the Piennes' wedding, the Constable claimed his "e;right of the lord,"e; also known as "e;right of the first night,"e; which was believed to be a feudal lord's legal privilege in me-dieval Europe, to have sexual relationships with vassal wom-en, especially on their wedding night. After losing a battle for his king, the man became drunk and angry. He brutally raped her with severe trauma. Lady Joan of Piennes nee Bouvier was a twenty-one-year-old beau-ty.
