Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The present volume is a translation of one of the four Confucian canonical books called the Chung Y ung, which has been translated by Dr. Legge as the Doctrine of the Mean. The Chinese word Chung means central - hence right, true, fair and square and Y any means common, or dinary - hence universal. The two Chinese words therefore mean the true, fair and square, universal standard of right; in short, the common-sense of right.
