Lee Stahelis life as a Pilot is comprised of manyadventurous episodes. Most of the ones written here inhis book begin with WW11, while he was in the Navy,flying PBYs in the battle against the Japanese in theAleutian Islands of Alaska. They continue when hejoins the Navy Reserves, the U.S. Coast and Geodeticsurvey, Arctic Pacific Airlines, Alaska Freight Lines,Western Electric, and General Petroleum. He flewfor all of these, through the remote Bush Countryof Alaska. He spent many years as a CommercialPilot flying for Wien Airlines in Alaska, and was aninstrumental part of everything he did, everywhere hewent. His position as a Pilot made him invaluable tothe U.S. and Alaska, and to the Eskimo people. Hisbook reflects the close relationship he had with theEskimo people, and all through those long, severelycold winters, they took care of one another. His strongand honest character follows him everywhere in thisbook. He later started his own Air Service out ofKiana, Alaska, where he lived with his family of sixchildren until they were grown. Lee flew airplanes for60 years, before he retired from Wien Alaska Airlinesin 1996.
