Swindon: A Sixth Selection

For this sixth selection of images of Swindon, the majority of which are previously unpublished, the Swindon Society has continued with the format that has proved so successful in the preceding five volumes. Included in the pages of this new edition are scenes of Swindon people at work and at play, buildings now gone but still remembered, local personalities, street scenes and events that have touched the lives of townsfolk through the years. This book looks back and marvels at the changes that have taken place since the 1830s when the town's population was a mere 1,700, compared to its present-day population of 180,000. With the establishment of the new 'unitary' Borough of Swindon on 1 April 1997, Swindon can look forward to the dawn of a second century and an eventual City status as its next historical milestone.
