SUS Legislation

The Unified Health System was created in 1988 by the Brazilian Federal Constitution. SUS is regulated by the organic health laws 8.080/90, 8.142/90, decrees and ordinances, and has faced challenges to its implementation. The health system is called unique because it should govern the same doctrine and the same organizational principles throughout the national territory, under the responsibility of the three spheres of government: federal, state and municipal. This system proposes to ensure comprehensive and free care for the entire population.
