Tauranga, NZ - it is the 1990's - just before the turn of the century - Financier Neil Hunter is warned of a global slow down by a trusted friend. He does not believe it but a feeling deep down inside changes his point of view.

On the other side of the world, his partner in business doesn't believe there is any slowdown coming and sets a plan in place to take over the New York business, dump Neil and the board and make it his own. The only problem is Neil's persistence. He will not let go easily or leave without his investments. He is not going without a fight. Meanwhile, on the other side of Tauranga, abandoned by her partner, Cecile De Muir holds a dream to become a doctor. Alone now with a small child to support she struggles to survive.

At a busy supermarket in town, Neil stood behind her at the checkout. Her difficulty to pay for her groceries became his when an overwhelming feeling of someone walking over his grave suddenly shook him. His offer to pay is met with some caution. Could she trust this man so easily after being dumped by her partner? Looking up at him, she could see a shadow of sadness in his eyes.
