Oglethorpe County was created from Wilkes County in 1793 and later became the parent county to Madison County. The Superior Court of the county had jurisdiction over all criminal matters, civil cases involving title to land, appeals from Inferior Court decisions and Justice's Courts, divorces, grand juries, naturalizations, and registration of land deeds.
