"My task is to spark interest in history. Not to teach history, not even to tell it, but simply to awaken curiosity about it."
- Boris Akunin
In this book, the pages of Russian history of the 15th-16th centuries come to life-both the dramatic, pivotal events and the seemingly minor episodes whose impact on the course of history is often overlooked. The narrative spans the period from the liberation of Rus' from foreign domination to the Time of Troubles-when independence was once again lost due to internal crisis and foreign invasion.
Why did initial successes give way to defeats? What in the "second" Russian state was flawed from the beginning, or later became the cause of such instability?
This third volume of the History of the Russian State continues the conversation about the nation's past with readers who prefer an engaging narrative style but still want facts, not fiction-and who wish to draw their own conclusions.
About the author:
Boris Akunin (real name Grigory Shalovich Chkhartishvili) is a Russian writer, Japanologist, literary scholar, translator, and public figure. He has also published under the literary pseudonyms Anna Borisova and Anatoly Brusnikin. Akunin is the author of dozens of novels, novellas, literary essays, and translations of Japanese, American, and English literature.
According to the author himself, his literary works have been translated into more than 30 languages worldwide. Forbes Russia has named Akunin among the top ten Russian cultural figures recognized abroad, thanks to his contracts with leading publishers in Europe and the United States.
Moskovskaya Komsomolskaya Pravda declared Akunin the most popular Russian writer of the first decade of the 21st century. And according to the 2010 report of Rospechat (The Russian Book Market), his works rank among the top ten most-published books in Russia.
About the series:
The first volume, The History of the Russian State. From the Origins to the Mongol Invasion, was published in November 2013. The second historical volume followed a year later. The main aim of the project, according to the author, is to present a retelling of history that is objective and free from any ideological system, while remaining faithful to historical fact.
For this, Boris Akunin carefully compared data from a wide variety of historical sources. Out of the mass of details, names, numbers, dates, and opinions, he sought to select what is certain-or at least most plausible. Trivial and unreliable information was discarded.
This series was created for those who wish to know Russian history more thoroughly. For his benchmark in retelling the history of Russia, Akunin has chosen Nikolai Karamzin's monumental work The History of the Russian State.
