This richly documented study chronicles the motives, means, and methods for learning German in Russia during the Enlightenment. It shows how German became the most important foreign language for Russians seeking advancement in politics, the civil service, business, or science. Drawing partly on previously unused sources, it creates a new foundation for understanding Russo-German cultural relations.
