Comparative hypoglycemic effect of the aqueous leaves extracts of Nauclea latifolia and Daniella oliveri on alloxan-induced diabetic rats was investigated after sixteen days of oral administration of extracts. The effect of the extracts on the activities of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine aminotransferarse (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), total protein (TP), and albumin (ALB) were also evaluated. D. oliveri had no significant effect (p˃0.05) on the hypoglycemic level of alloxan-induced diabetic rats as compared to the normal control. Whereas, N. latifolia extracts showed significant effect (p˂0.05) when compared with the control. Also, D. oliveri extracts had no significant effect (p˃0.05) on ALB and TP of the liver, but showed significant effect (p˂0.05) on AST, ALT and ALP of the liver. Similarly, N. latifolia extracts had no significant effect (p˃0.05) on AST, ALT and TP of the liver, but there was significant effect (p˂0.05) on liver ALT and ALP; when compared with the normal control. The results of this experiment thus, suggests that N. latifolia has higher hypoglycemic effect than D. oliveri.
