The theme is based on the premise that, the world information system is dominated by large Western news agencies, leading to a "one-way" flow of information. Africa is often portrayed in a biased and stereotypical way, with either an "apocalyptic" image focused on war, disease and misery, or a "paradisiacal" image that paints it as a pre-modern wilderness. The author sets out to analyze whether, some 10 years after previous studies, the representation has changed, focusing on the online press of two Francophone newspapers, Le Parisien et le Soir. Methodologically, in view of a quantitative and qualitative examination, he opted for the procedure called "content analysis as inquiry." The author relies on agenda-setting theory, according to which the media, by choosing topics to cover, influence audience priorities, and on Social Representation theory, i.e., how the media help build a repertoire of predefined and stereotyped images.
