In order to combat their daughter's battle with depression and self-harm, Alexa's parents create Calexa, a controversial pill that ages the user a year for every self-inflicted wound. The pill is widely praised, sending Alexa and her family into newfound wealth and fame. Alexa further descends into her mental illnesses as she copes with her parent's notoriety and sudden abandonment, along with the troubles that come with rapid aging. In therapy, Alexa meets a boy named Kyle, and the two begin to slowly build an unlikely friendship neither of them knew they needed.
