Teaching Mathematics: Favorite Topics And Techniques

Professor Martin has taught mathematics for 30 years. In Part One, "Elementary and Intermediate Algebra," he offers many enrichment subjects or extensions of traditional topics. Included are mediants, logic, incommensurability, different ways to solve equations/ inequalities, applications of exponential functions, different ways to teach variation, and Euler's Totient function. In Part Two, "College Algebra, Trigonometry and Calculus," the same is done at a higher level. Some topics are rational functions, population modeling with and without matrices, four sections on number theory, different applications of infinite series, differentials and relative error, mathematics of finance, and applications of trigonometry. These include: "How to Win a Snowball Fight", "How Far can You See?" and "How Long is a Satellite in View?" The book has 35 sections and includes exercises with answers.
