It is set sixteen years before events in The Rise of an Orphan in the land of Nusantara where cybernetic augmentations are commonplace. Technological advances offer a stark contrast to the living conditions of the impoverished masses who are desperate to upgrade to improve their chances of survival.

The Great War is growing in scale, pulling in reluctant nations, and Nusantara is struggling to maintain its neutral status, given the threat it faces. Disaffected Anatolian soldiers are going AWOL, united by their hatred for the ruling San Teria party whose theocracy has triggered nuclear Armageddon.
