A. Shardin was the literary pseudonym of the Russian writer Pyotr Petrovich Sukhonin (1821-1884), a man with a colorful and complex life. A descendant of an ancient family, he squandered his fortune in card games and, having lost his position, was forced to serve as the manager of an estate in Pavlovsk. It was during these years that Sukhonin turned to literature, creating a number of significant historical novels, including "e;The Family of the Princes Zatsepin, or the Time of Passions and Executions,"e; "e;At the Turn of the Century,"e; and his most famous work, "e;Princess Vladimirskaya."e;The novel covers the reign of Catherine II and combines real historical events with dramatic human destinies. The book features prominent figures of the 18th century: Empress Catherine II, the Orlov brothers, the princes Trubetskoy and Golitsyn, Counts Golovkin and Shuvalov, military leaders and courtiers, whose destinies are intertwined in a complex web of court intrigue, love, betrayal, and the struggle for power. A central figure is Princess Vladimirskaya (Tarakanova), a mysterious woman who posed as the daughter of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna and Count Razumovsky. Her desire for the throne becomes a symbol of a fatal female destiny, combining audacity, dreams, and doom. Her attempt to gain power ends tragically: the Empress's favorite, Alexei Orlov-Chesmensky, deceives the impostor and brings her to Russia, where she dies in the dungeons of the Peter and Paul Fortress. A. Shardin combines historical accuracy with vivid artistic expression. His novel not only recreates the atmosphere of Catherine the Great's era but also reveals the inner dramas of people caught in the grip of ambition, passion, and the will of the state. The reader is presented with a broad historical canvas Russia during the reign of Catherine the Great, with all its contradictions, splendor, and tragedy. This edition includes all four parts of the novel and presents the complete text of "e;Princess Vladimirskaya,"e; one of the most striking and dramatic works of Russian historical fiction of the 19th century.
