Set in early 1970s America and the aftermath of the Civil Rights Movement, Prepped: A Memoir, is the story of Veda Pendletons journey from her predominantly black community in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, to The Ethel Walker School (Walkers) in Simsbury, Connecticut. Its the story of a gifted black girl who chose to accept the opportunity to have a better chance at life in America and attend prep school. Veda entered a foreign world fraught with academic, social and emotional challenges as she came of age in both black and white worlds.A young adult memoir, Prepped is an account of Vedas time at Walkers and how she struggled with self-esteem and a new way of learning. These experiences helped her grow and learn in ways she had never imagined.
