Out Side embraces the limitations of new AI tools as constraints for creation. Faces, hands, landscapes appear in their raw hallucinated state. These often flawed or surreal depictions express the underlying ambiguity of the story: in what dimension do the characters live? Why do laws of space and time seem to bend around them? Are these aporias unique to this story or are they an essential quality of all fiction, all storytelling? As AI systems evolve, we can expect more fine-grained artistic control of generated images and text. Out Side captures a pivotal moment for culture, story, and image at the moment of AI’s birth.
