Neutralization of gastric hyperacidity by antacids

Gastric hyperacidity, due to excessive hydrochloric acid production, can cause heartburn, dyspepsia and gastro-oesophageal reflux. Mineral antacids, such as aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide and calcium carbonate, neutralize this excess acid and relieve symptoms. This study evaluated the acid neutralizing capacity (ANC) of 13 antacids marketed in Algeria, using pH-metric titration and the titrimetric method. Results showed that most products exceeded FDA standards, with Rennie (calcium magnesium carbonate) in the lead, followed by Maalox. Dosage form influences efficacy, with liquids outperforming chewable tablets. Although some alginate- and bicarbonate-based products have a lower ANC, their protective mechanism remains relevant. Sodium content must also be considered. These data offer a guide to therapeutic choice and the direction of future research.
