Nostalgia and Modernity examines a variety of artistic and cultural expressions of the Kathmandu Valley by bringing together a group of scholars from diverse fields. The confluence of such scholars with different approaches is crucial in bridging the gaps created by looking at Nepal's art narrowly. By highlighting various expressions of art manifested through painting, sculpture, architecture, dance, and even drama, issues of nostalgia and modernity are juxtaposed to examine the art of Nepal from new viewpoints. The style of art we call Nepali is produced by the Newars, the original inhabitants of the Kathmandu Valley, who shaped it from ancient to modern times. The present volume celebrates various artistic expressions of the Newars as well as other ethnic groups that have contributed to the rich cultural heritage of the country. Various traditions, including the Kumari cult and street theater are illustrated along with contemporary art and architecture.
