This book describes facts rather than speculation. It attempts to show how people in many parts of the world - especially during the latter half of the nineteenth century - not only limited themselves to theoretical discussions of how to produce food, but also avoided famines in direct ways by working to produce more. Without waiting for the assistance and guidance of international organizations, large-scale, successful irrigation and land rehabilitation projects have increased. Crops from reclaimed lands today feed many thousands of people.So it is encouraging as we look at some of these projects to remember this fact, which is that what man has been able to do in the past, he can do again.
