Introduction to the Theory of Optics

Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. I have purposely abstained from entering into details of methods of observation or instrumental appliances. These belong more properly to the courses of laboratory instruction. I hope that the short biographical notices of deceased authors who have made important contributions to the science will be found to be of interest.
