Scientists and engineers from industry, academia, and majorresearch institutes from 19 countries contributed to theVienna Conference on Human Computer Interaction (VCHCI '93). This volume contains the proceedings of the conference. Onlysubmissions of the highest scientific quality were acceptedas papers, and all contributions address the latest researchand application in the human aspects of design and use ofcomputing systems. The papers cover a large field of humancomputer interaction including design, evaluation,interactive architectures, cognitive models, workplaceenvironment, and HCI application areas. The motto of the conference, Fin de Si cle, affiliatesVienna's intellectual tradition to the field's progressivedevelopment at the end of this century. The VCHCI is focusedon showing that HCI is more than an area to beautifyinteraction with computers, provokes disputes among itsdifferent contributing fields, does not flee the vitalquestions forpeople using computers, and provides radicallynew opportunities for users.
