George Boole

George Boole (1815-1864) is known not only for his research and textbooks on calculus, but also for his innovations in symbolic logic. The utility of "Boolean algebra" in computing has roused curiosity in the nature and extent of his achievements, the most well-known being "A Mathematical Analysis of Logic" and "An Investigation of the Laws of Thought". He also wrote manuscript essays; several of which were intended for a non-technical work "The Philosophy of Logic", which he did not complete. This text contains an edited selection of these essays. There is a substantial introduction, which relates the essays to Boole's publications and the historical context of his time, and relates their history, as family, followers and friends have tried to compile an edition. The book is aimed at logicians, mathematicians, philosophers, and those interested in the history of Victorian Britain.
