The activities in this book are designed to teach that a pattern is a sequence of objects that repeats over and over. Children learn that they can use patterns to predict what comes next and to solve problems. Working with patterns is key to the development of a child's mathematical thinking. It provides a framework for recognizing the patterns in our number system. It helps children develop their ability to make generalizations, think logically, and solve problems in mathematics. Early experiences with patterns develop skills that are needed for work with functions and algebra in the later years. All the activities in this book support current mathematics standards.
