Deep Eutectic Solvents as Electrolytes and Electrode Processing Agents

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have emerged as a promising class of green materials for next-generation energy storage systems. This work explores the multifunctional role of DESs as both electrolytes and electrode processing agents in high-performance and recyclable coin cell batteries. Owing to their low volatility, wide electrochemical stability window, high ionic conductivity, and tunable physicochemical properties, DESs offer a safer and more sustainable alternative to conventional organic electrolytes. In addition, their strong solvation ability enables effective electrode material processing, including metal salt dissolution, surface modification, and binder-free electrode fabrication. The use of DESs simplifies battery manufacturing, reduces hazardous solvent usage, and enhances material recovery at end of life, supporting circular economy principles. Electrochemical performance, interfacial stability, and recyclability aspects of DES-based coin cells are highlighted, demonstrating their potential to achieve high energy efficiency while minimizing environmental impact. Overall, this study highlights the ability of deep eutectic solvents for high battery performances.
