Breaking Barriers to Doctoral Education

This book uses narrative inquiry to unpack the story of the Accomplished Study Program in Research Excellence (ASPIRE), an innovative, personalised mentorship initiative developed by Black academics to address the underrepresentation of Black students in UK doctoral study. By integrating theory, data-driven outcomes and personal narratives, this work contributes to scholarship on equity in education, intersectionality and anti-racist practices. It provides a replicable framework for addressing intersectional inequalities across global contexts, making it valuable for academics, policymakers and institutions committed to fostering inclusive and anti-racist educational environments.
