Application of the radioisotope ²²5Ac in medicinal chemistry

The paper describes an introduction to alpha particles and their importance. As well as applications of the radionuclide Ac in the field of medicinal chemistry in the period between the years 2022-2024. The paper's introduction tells a little about the history of the discovery and importance of radiochemical elements. As well as the conceptualization of alpha, beta and gamma particles. In medicinal chemistry, cancer can be treated by exposing cancer cells to radiation (alpha, beta or gamma). Alpha radiation, as described in targeted alpha therapy, usually delivers directly to the cancer cells, killing the cancer cells without also damaging nearby healthy tissue. The Ac-225 isotope has a half-life of 10 days, long enough to incorporate it into a radiopharmaceutical that has time to circulate in the body but short enough for it to decay to stable products without adverse dose consequences. This paper describes a brief bibliographical review of the application of the radionuclide Ac-225 in the field of medicinal chemistry, covering the topics of chelating agents used in the treatment of tumors, some nanoparticles and, finally, radiopharmaceuticals.
