Algorithms of War

Algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI) have become common features of modern warfare where data-driven processes are increasingly involved in civilian deaths.

Civil society groups have sought to ban AI and drones, but they could more effectively used to protect civilians in armed conflict, by seeing them as human beings needing protection.

Algorithms of War explores how these technologies, while promising precision and minimal civilian casualties, have often resulted in increased violence and distance between the battlefield and those in control. Drawing from civilian accounts, military perspectives and recent research from the Sahel region, Ukraine, Iraq and Gaza, the book argues that AI integration in war is a double-edged sword - while it risks increasing civilian harm, it also can provide better accountability in military operations when under human-centred control.
