Abolishment of General Average

Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. In view of the completion of the Panama Canal - the masterpiece of human constructive help to the Maritime Commerce of the world, I deem it an auspicious moment to propose the abolishment of general average.<br><br>Commerce by sea has been fettered by this growing land barnacle for nearly three thousand years. It was useful prior to the introduction of marine underwriting, but has served its time, and should not be allowed to remain as a drag upon the interests of mankind.<br><br>If my suggestions meet with favor, I shall be partly repaid by the thought that the saving thus effected is constructive in its nature, and that it may aid in the upbuilding of our maritime commerce, to which my whole life has been devoted.
