A History of Hostelries in Northamptonshire

This fascinating survey of the public houses of Northamptonshire from the earliest times to the present is culled from a variety of sources and records. The book looks at hostelries past and present, (inns, alehouses, beershops) and the rich variety of their names and their meanings - some unique to the county - including those that have undergone changes over time for a number of reasons. Some of these achieved national fame, historically or in literature; others have witnessed amazing incidents, some tragic, others amusing. There is also a look at licensing, drinking and related crimes and various Acts passed over the centuries and their effect on local people.
