Kirza (The Army Boot) is arguably the funniest and most tragic of all Russian-language books about the Soviet army. Its author Vadim Chekunov serves as a self-appointed narrator who finds himself pulled out of college to be drafted, then observes his own spiritual awakening with a healthy dose of army humor.
