Geschichte und Systematik des adverbalen Dativs im Deutschen

The authors examine why a relatively small number of German verbs (helfen, Danken, etc) govern the dative rather than the accusative. They propose an explanation for each verb, accounting for the historical and systemic roots of the dative government. Three classes of dative verbs are identified.
