From Chicken to Eagle

They paddled the unrunnable and lived to tell about it . . .

"There was no path, none at all. A VW-sized rock lay dead ahead-to the right, churning whitewater; to the left, an eight-foot standing wave, foaming white on top. In the stern Kamala stalled. It seemed insane to dive into that mountain of green water towering six feet above Roz's head. From the bow, Roz shouted, "Left Here " The bow of their yellow canoe rose with their matching power strokes and knifed into the crest of the standing wave. They disappeared from view, plunging into the trough just upstream of the next standing wave. Behind them, one at a time, three other boats entered the Class 4 Canyon Rapids, listed as unrunnable in open canoes."

From Chicken to Eagle is a story of seven courageous women who took a wilderness adventure at a time-1979-when women were testing their mettle in society and in the wilderness. They accomplished things that were beyond their imaginations and comfort levels, on the river and across the next forty years.

This collection of short memoirs chronicles the many ways these seven found meaning, purpose, challenge and enjoyment in their personal and professional lives.
