Imagine a world where humans and animals can speak and understand one another, in the mythical country of Mexas, combining most of the southwest into one nation state. Mateo Montoya lives in Fort Worth, Mexas, and he dearly loves his dog, Jamie. But his family is moving south to Mazatln, Mexas, on the Pacific coast, and they cannot afford to bring Jamie, and he is put in a Fort Worth kennel. Soon after the Montoya family arrive in Mazatln, poisoned and supernaturally strong iguanas grow from the lichen-covered rocks on their back porch. The iguanas bully and taunt the family. Meanwhile, in Fort Worth, Jamie and another dog escape the kennel and begin a 1,000 mile journey to Mazatln that parallels Ulysses' travels in the Odyssey. Will Jamie survive his travels, and how will the Montoyas rid their home of the evil iguanas?
