Teaching in a Rural Primary School: One Year is Not Enough

An academic got a job teaching in a rural primary school and improved reading scores but found that low expectations and few opportunities conspired to defeat upward mobility. One student became a doctor and one a social worker but most could not escape their world of poverty.
