New Hope combines three of Ernest Haycox's finest short novels with the interconnected stories he wrote about New Hope, a freighting town on the Missouri River in what was then Nebraska Territory. In "The Roaring Hour," Clay Travis, the new town marshal, and his fianc e, Gail, are up against the combined forces of the gambling hall owner, the sheriff controlled by him, and the local outlaw leader. A young upstart holds up a stagecoach in "The Kid from River Red" to prove his manhood and impress an outlaw. "The Hour of Fury" tells the tale of Dane Starr, who has come to town to lose his identity as a gunfighter and instead finds himself at the center of a dangerous power struggle.
