This book is about two men and their choices as a result of overcoming, and most times falling to overcome the booby-traps of abuse. All abuse! How many of us have been the recipients of some sort of intentional mistreatment? How many of us have had no choice but to watch as our mothers or siblings have been beaten, or worse, by people who were supposed to love them, like Mendell's mother was injured in this tale. How many of us still battle with demons behind being called fat, black, not black enough, ugly, stupid, worthless, gay, unworthy, and a host of things meant to steal our self-esteem, like China, the teenage runaway you'll meet in these pages? This book is about attacking fragile machismo, insincere self-confidence, and self-worth. Nobody wants to hear about the molested gladiator, and even less so about the gladiator molester, like Anderson Cater, the successful inner-city businessman and soul-stealing pedophile you'll suffer in this novel. To some extent or another, we are all one or more characters in this novel. It is my intention to make public the opportunistic homosexuals like the ones in my fictional jail, Mayfield Reformatory. It's important we realize we have all somehow become alright with situational passivism, like my character, Steve Mason, who discovered a truth and kept it to himself because it might be bad for business. You'll read here about Toni, a single mother, who knew very little about the raging erection that is the bane of most adolescent boys until she came home early from work and found her otherwise perfect son, Kenny, had fallen victim to hormones, even he didn't understand, but found the comfort he sought. It's my sincere concern that this book highlights the deficit of no male role models on the burgeoning sexuality of fatherless youth, boys, and girls.
