Jake Forest's effort to entice his high school heartthrob to date him by making her jealous backfires and he finds himself in a tempestuous relationship with racy, seductive, and often, manipulative Janis. They elope and are soon living in Portland where he finds part-time employment in a metropolitan hospital. With little income, no savings, and dismal prospects, Jake joins the Air Force.
