The Higgs boson - what does it mean?

On the 4th of July the Director General of Cern announced that a new particle had been discoverd that is consistent with the predicted standard model Higgs boson. In the new book Higgs: the Invention and Discovery of the 'God Particle' the author of the book Jim Baggot explains the science behind the discovery.
