In a world where people born with an exceptional skill, known as a Grace, are feared and exploited, Katsa carries the burden of a skill even she despises: the Grace of killing.
She lives under the command of her Uncle Randa, King of the Middluns, and is expected to carry out his dirty work, punnishing and torturing anyone who displeases him. Breaking arms and cutting off fingers are her stock-in-trade. Finding life under his rule increasingly unbearable Katsa forms an underground Council, whose purpose is to combat the destructive behavior of the seven kings - after all, the Middluns is only one of the seven kingdoms, and each of them is ruled its own king with his own personal agenda for power.
When the Council hears that the King of Liend's father has been kidnapped Katsa investigates . . . and stumbles across a mystery. Who would want to kidnap him, and why? And who was the extraordinary Graced fighter who challenged her fighting skills, for the first time, as she and the Council rushed the old man to saftey?
Something dark and deadly is rising in the north and creeping across the continent, and behind it all lurks the shadowy figure of a one eyed king . . .
Sometimes nothing but a Grace can save you

This book took me by total surprise and I ended reading for almost 9 hours straight, despite kids, dinner, finals and everything else. The cover did say it would slake the thirst of (desperate) twilight fans?. Well, yes and no. Let me tell you right now it?s NOT another Twilight. Some Twilight fans will love the story others will not. There are no vampires, but plenty of drama, romance and suspension for everyone who loves that. :-) But I?m getting ahead of myself. Let me tell you a little of the world Cashore has created;

There are 7 Kingdoms ( The Middlums, The Leinid, The Sunder, The Estill, The Wester, The Nander and the Monsea).
Once in a while a child is born with a Grace. Being Graced means you?re exceptionally good at something. Their gift could be as simple as the ability to do something small and do it exceptionally well like whistle or swim, but it could also be to excel in a lethal ability to fight or always hitting your target with a bow.
These children, the Graced ones are known by their eyes they have two different colors. Usually when it becomes clear that the child is Graced, the king sends for the child.
The Grace can be years in developing, so nobody truly knows what kind of Grace the child has. If the Grace is valuable to the king then he keeps the child in his service. If not the child goes home. People usually mock the Graced ones (depending on the kingdom), and keep their distance.
In Graceling we meet a regiment of wonderful characters, each one more wonderful, hilarious and infuriating then the one before! I will get back to a few of them, but first I want to introduce the main characters: Katsa and Po. Both with a Grace.
Katsa is the niece of King Randa of the Middlums. Katsa?s Grace is killing. Something she?s not exactly proud of, but makes the best of it. Her uncle has used her for years and Katsa is tired of being feared. Everytime someone crosses King Randa, he sends his niece and her reputation alone is f
